Barton Hill begins on the east side of South Gaffey Street in San Pedro and stretches to the waterfront with West Anaheim Street and West 9th Street as its borders. It is intersected by both the Harbor 110 Freeway and Route 47 which, with a quick trip over the Vincent Thomas Bridge and Gerald Desmond Bridge, leads you right into the heart of downtown Long Beach. The possibilities for fun and entertainment seem endless as the Barton Hill community gives residents easy access to downtown San Pedro and all its amenities. Every month the city has First Thursday’s art event where local businesses, eateries, galleries, and shops stay open late, offer special deals, and host exciting events with free music, dancing, and performances. It is a very spirited scene, and there is sure to be something for everybody to enjoy. The Port’s history with shipbuilding during WWII has made it a fitting place to house the retired Battleship USS Iowa which is open for the public to explore as a museum. The economic boom and expansion that took place after the war are why the Port of Los Angeles is still the biggest employer of longshore workers in the US today. The area celebrates its connection to the sea through features such as the Los Angeles Maritime Museum and the Gateway Plaza and Fanfare Fountain, both great attractions for the whole family. If you somehow get tired of what the mainland has to offer, then you can always hop on the Catalina Express for a quick day trip to the little island just off the coast or even board a ship at the World Cruise Center for an even grander adventure. All in all, Barton Hill gives residents a jumping-off point for not only what San Pedro and the Port have in store but also grants easy access to what other cities around Los Angeles and Long Beach have to offer as well.
