The South Shores area of San Pedro is a quiet hillside community with views overlooking the harbor and the majestic ocean towards Catalina Island. It spans from the coast along West Paseo Del Mar to West 9th Street, and from South Western Avenue to the border of Rancho Palos Verdes. South Shores reaches up to encompass Deane Dana Friendship Park as well. The park is certainly a focal point in South Shores, and it, and the nearby Martin J. Bogdanovich Recreation Center offer a variety of recreational and educational programs and activities to make it easy for every member of the family to find something to enjoy. Another central facet of this community is the Royal Palms Beach which has had quite an interesting transformation over the years. In the early 20th century, it was a luxurious getaway complete with a hot spring resort, but during World War II the military acquired the land and repurposed it. The beach was made public once again in the 1960’s, and current South Shores residents enjoy easy access to the amenities that it has to offer as it is a popular spot for surfing, scuba diving, picnicking, and even ocean research. Overall, South Shores is a peaceful place to settle down where you can enjoy a nice sea breeze, breathtaking views, and appreciate a little reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the city.
