In the early 20th century, it was a luxurious getaway complete with a hot spring resort, but during World War II, the military acquired the land and repurposed it. The beach was made public once again in the 1960’s, and current South Shores residents enjoy easy access to the amenities that it has to offer as it is a popular spot for surfing, scuba diving, picnicking, and even ocean research. Overall, South Shores is a peaceful place to settle down where you can enjoy a nice sea breeze, breathtaking views, and appreciate a little reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the city. 

In regards to what South Shores has to offer; South Shores Elementary School is one of the most sought-after elementary schools in the San Pedro area. My family goes to Deane Dana Friendship Park and Nature Center quite often, as my daughter, Maddie, loves the playground equipment on site, which includes multiple slides, swings, climbing rocks, and a pirate ship! I also used to play slow pitch softball at this park in an adult league. Our family also really enjoys the Elks Lodge in South Shores. You do need to either be a member or attend with a member to visit this facility, but it is worth it! This lodge has phenomenal views of the harbor, delicious food and drinks in the dining room, live music, and entertainment quite often, and great spaces to rent for large family gatherings, such as weddings. Our family’s favorite restaurant in South Shores is Sirinat Thai and Sushi Bar. We usually order the “Nest of Love” as an appetizer, which is shrimp wrapped with thin crispy noodles. Their Tom Yum and Tom Kha soups are good as well. For a main dish, I really enjoy the Panang Curry, although there are several main dish options to choose from.
